He received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master’s of Architecture from Yale University. In 1990 he opened a practice in Vero Beach, Florida. He is the principal designer for the firm Merrill, Pastor & Colgan Architects. His work has been recognized fourteen times by the Florida American Institute of Architects (AIA), and three times by the national AIA. In 2004 Merrill and Pastor Architects was given the Arthur Ross Award by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. In 2012 Scott Merrill was awarded the Seaside Prize and in 2016 the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture awarded him the Richard H. Driehaus Prize.
